Opisthotropis andersonii

Olive-green body with light black spots, yellow abdomen. The head is relatively slender, facilitating foraging among the stones in the stream. The eyes and nostrils are located on the top of the head, facilitating movement in the water. Generally, adults do not exceed 30 cm in length. There are color differences among individuals, ranging from olive green to brown.

Behavior

Completely nocturnal, they come out at night to prey on freshwater shrimp, small fish, and their favorite, earthworms. During heavy rains, they also appear in groups to hunt earthworms that are washed out by the water. They are not prone to biting or emitting odors, but that does not mean they cannot bite.

Habitat

Distributed across Hong Kong, it is one of the common nocturnal snakes in Hong Kong. Since they forage in freshwater, they are commonly found in slow-flowing streams.

Approximate Species

Non-professionals should not touch snakes: They are easily confused with other water snakes, but can generally be distinguished from venomous snakes.
